Health Benefits of Ginger for Your Skin (Skin Care Blog Post)

Ginger is awesome.

I use it a lot.

I use ginger for cooking, brewing tea and sometimes baking too. It has an exotic flavor that's quite addictive. Even though ginger didn't help with pregnancy nausea, it helped with an upset stomach that comes once in a while.

I like ginger. I use it a lot.

But I've never used ginger for skin care.

At least not until recently.

On the north side of Seattle, where my family lives now, there is a local grocer called Central Market that offers mostly natural products, including makeup and skin care. I've bought an eyeliner made with volcanic ashes there. The store carries neat stuff. When I saw GO Ginger Face Moisturizer (by the Ginger People), I knew I'd like it.

Who are the Ginger People?

The Ginger People make and sell ginger products. They've been in business for the last 30 years, and they are good at it.

They are proud of their ginger too, especially about the fact that their products are all natural, organic, and non-GMO.

Their new skincare line, GO Energy for the Skin, is all natural and certified organic as well. It has a wide range of products, but I've only tried the Ginger Facial Moisturizer.

Quick Review

Other than the lack of SPF, this moisturizer is a gem! It has rich, concentrated consistency, but lathered on smoothly and absorbed quickly. It hydrated skin in a matter of seconds, with no oily residue, and left skin refreshingly soft.

Now that you know how I feel about GO Ginger Moisturizer, let's talk about the health benefits of ginger.

Ginger contains hundreds of active compounds, many of them with healthy benefits. The most popular of these are gingerol, which has cancer-fighting anti-inflammatory properties, and zingibrene and shogaol, which offer anti-oxidant effects. Medical studies have proven that ginger indeed treated cases of nausea, migraine, extreme menstruation pain, hypertension, liver damage (by acetaminophen) and colon inflammation.

In fact, ginger is so bewilderingly potent that The Cancer Prevention Research found it "interesting to see an herb that is not under patent being treated with the same medical approach used to test pharmaceutical drugs in which there is obviously far greater vested interest in studying and proving their validity."

Kudos to ginger! But what about our skin?

If ginger's anti-oxidant properties don't entice enough, then how about the fact that it's great for circulation? Components in ginger contain chromium, zinc and magnesium -- all minerals capable of promoting blood flow by either regulating insulin, relaxing blood vessels or thinning blood.

Blood carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body -- your skin included -- and transports waste products away from cells. So, you can imagine how an increase in blood flow can help you glow.

Of course, mild topical products aren't plastic surgery, and won't give you immediate effect. But consistent use of ginger products will improve skin gradually.

Well, I've said an earful (again)!

Hopefully you're thoroughly convinced about the health benefits of ginger for your skin, if you ever felt otherwise in the first place :O)

Good night!
