Propinquity - what a pretentious word for a (peasant-ish) fashion blog!
I thought so too. At first.
Then I realized the true meaning of "propinquity," after mispronouncing it "pro-pin-city" of course, and how it extends outside of social psychology, and into every type of relationship life has to offer.
The universe, in fact, abides by propinquity.
I know what you're thinking: Oh great! Not only is she pretentious, she's effing philosophical too. But please hear me out! Without commonalities, a relationship between people or things or even garments simply don't work.
Propinquity - a brief thought.
If you google the word, you'll find a lot of writing about propinquity. Some of them are too deep for a fun night of fashion-blogging, so briefly, propinquity refers to the physical or psychological proximity between people (kinship), or a similarity between things (like-attracts-like).
I know nothing about psychology, but am extremely practical, and have long recognized the importance of finding people with similarities when creating (meaningful) relationships. So many "friends" came and went. Some of them left scars while others brushed by. The ones who always stood by -- however small the group -- are the ones I share similar background and values with.
Now that I have children -- two girls who will probably inherit my sensitivity -- I feel compelled to teach them about propinquity. (In few years, of course.) Perhaps doing so will enable them to better-understand failed connections, take it slow when letting others in, and have more opportunities for meaningful relationships?
Hey Girlie Blogger, let's keep it light. Where's the fashion?
Right. Fashion. My maxi dress. My 16-dollar, peasant-ish maxi dress.
I styled it, with respect to propinquity, in the following ways:
1. Complementary Colors
Camel, brown, and taupe are all muted tones that complement each other. Even if gunmetal and gold were introduced by the necklace, they are dull and blend in with the dress's main colors.
2. Similar Details
The floral print on the maxi dress looks alike the necklace's dangling petals and the shoe's embellishments.
3. Same Notion
A shoulder-baring dress and stringy sandals both resemble summer's cool and easy vibe.
Thank you again for reading.
What about you?
What's your take on propinquity?
