Ever find yourself in debt after accessory shopping?
Don't worry. It happens to every girlie girl. You start a shopping trip with one bracelet in mind, but become overzealous at the stores, and try on every piece of jewelry you see. Before you know it, you have just recovered the U.S. economy by walking out with the entire store.
Unwise as it may seem in hindsight, buying all those pretty things felt so good at the time.
If you are just now cringing at your credit card bill, and vowing to never overspend again, there is hope. Just know that it takes an awful amount of discipline, so good luck girlies!
Shop in one place
On any given shopping trip, you are surrounded by temptations. Take the local mall, for example, every other store has some type of accessory staring at you in the face.
To avoid buying too much of the same thing, stick with one store. Get what you need from that place and stop right there.
Create a shopping list
Ever wonder why some people are anal about having a grocery list? It helps them save.
Prior to going shopping, create a "must" list and a "lust" list. Find things on your "must" list first. If you still have money left, then move on to the "lust" list. However, if you have exceeded your budget, then re-prioritize.
Stick to your budget
This one is a no-brainer, yet it is so hard to accomplish. But do try to stick to your budget.
Shop cheap for trendy items
Feather in your hair? Neon clutches? Anything that looks like a trend will eventually go away. So why spend a fortune on them?
My neighbor K, who happens to be a fashion stylist, suggested going to stores like Forever 21 for trendy accessories. Not only will you get this season's hottest stuff, you also stretch your dollar.

great advice! forever 21 is often my choice store for accessories, also!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice, I think we all fall into this trap at some point or another!
ReplyDeleteI use the same tips as you, and I agree on shopping at forever21 for trends. There is no use wasting a lot of cash on something that will only be in season for a bit and then never wear it again. But I love accessory shopping!!!! I can't help but over spend X-D
ReplyDeletewww.mayrabarragan90.blogspot.com
I just bought some gorgeous accessories today at a flea market! I try to hit up thrift/consignment shops. I try to buy items that are on sale, I hate paying full price. Old Navy as a very cool selection of accessories and I use my coupons with them!

I'm actually not big on accessories, but I'm trying to be. I see how much it actually changes an outfit. I recently went to Forever 21 and almost bought every piece of jewelry I picked up. Luckily, my boyfriend was there to choose what I should and shouldn't buy. So I guess he's how I stop from overspending. :P

thanks for these great tips! it's so easy to over spend w accessories bc they're just small things, i often just grab them w/o thinking how much everything will add up. esp at F21 since it's all so cheap!
ReplyDeleteOH! this post is definitely what i need! LOL
ReplyDeletei remember going to an accessories store to buy gifts last xmas... i ended up buying more for myself than for those i intended... and also, i ended up over my budget... it's so tempting since everything looks nice!
i also think that we should buy accessories that are not just on-the-season but those which will last long, and will look good on most of your clothes... i bought this one necklace just because it looks cute but when i went home, i could not find a single piece from my closet which will fit it... i have never used it until now... i just wasted money..

P.S. See what is new in my shop.
This is such a great post! I am just now really getting into accessories and I was actually fortunate enough to have pretty much all of then donated to me. I have always bought earrings, but not too much else unless it was like real gold rings or necklaces! I totally agree with shopping at places where you pay less as trends do change all of the time so why spend a fortune? I love the line about recovering the U.S. economy! Too funny! :)
ReplyDeletelove this post!! i don't spend enough on accessories actually haha!
ReplyDeletebeautiful and great blog! I love your way to write!
ReplyDeletelook at my fashion blog--> www.styleandtrouble.com
Thanks for the advice! I am terrible at shopping for accessories. I get distracted and end up buying really cute pieces that I don't need and don't end up getting what I went in there for. I definitely need to make a list!
ReplyDeletegreat tips - i actually just cleaned out my jewellery and realise i buy WAY too may things that I don't actually wear that often! will be following your tips in future! :)

Aaaaaargh, you make me feel baaad!
ReplyDeleteI'm frugal at other things, and have a grocery shopping list, BUT such a crazy shopper when it comes to accesories. However, perhaps because I'm still single and only spend mostly on my own, I tend to regret what I did NOT buy then what i DID buy, hahaha!
I guess that would change once I have a family. Well, at least I hope so!

This is awesome advice. I totally have that issue. I go shopping with a few items in mind and leave with a boatload of things I didn't need. I typically try to write out a list. I feel that if i actually cross items of the list, I stick to it more than I would if I just tried to remember what it is I needed! Awesome post!

Same tips as you!! Hope you got some fun new accessories!!

I just raid my sister's jewelry box. ;) Ha, just kidding. Um, kinda. lol
ReplyDeleteI pretty much use the same tactics as you!
great post! Totally agree that it's super easy to overspend on accessories.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing about cheap jewelry is that I've had one too many things break on me after one a few wears or it turns my skin green so have been laying off the cheap jewelry and just saving to buy nicer things that will last longer (and also why I created my own jewelry line!) but I do agree for something super trendy that F21 is the best way to go.
great post! xo
ReplyDeleteFor accessories I also shop at places like forever 21 and Charlotte Russe. They have great pieces that are super inexpensive!
ReplyDeleteI avoid overspending on accessories by not taking my sister with me she has a habit of selling me on things that I don't need and well I do the same to her haha
ReplyDeleteyou're too cute! great advice.
ReplyDeleteI definitely go to F21 to buy trendier accessories for cheap! then I don't feel bad when styles change.

Forever 21 is amazing and so affordable! I like to buy one statement piece or lots of little things :)
ReplyDeletevictoriasprocrastinationproject.blogspot.com
I have enough accessories to last a lifetime.I don't really need anymore but I can't help myself.Whenever I'm cleaning my room I'm reminded of the fact I could open up a store with the crazy amount of accessories I have but still I keep buying more. I really think I need to go to rehab for shopping so much. haha:D
ReplyDeleteI agree with your neighbor- Forever 21 has the best trendy accessories around. All their items are so cute, girly and gorgeous especially their long necklaces.
Great tips by the way :D
I used to do this a lot at H&M when I was at university. Before I knew it I had spent £20! This is really a great post... nowadays a generally do most of my shopping online and check out baskets are amazing for limiting the 'buyers remorse'!
ReplyDeletegreat tips! i love getting my accessories from F21 because they are so cheap and you can mix and match. you have a great blog! <3
ReplyDeletetoni

ReplyDeleteI try to only go for the accessories I know that I'm going to wear! I also just have to comment I love your boots :)
ReplyDeletewww.heatherhoneyblog.blogspot.com
Forever 21 is AMAZING for cheap accessories. I also hit up the clearance racks at Target, Old Navy and Kohls whenever I'm in there, just to see what's there. I've found amazing pieces for under $5!
ReplyDeleteI love this post! So true! Great advice :) xo
ReplyDeletei love forever 21! ebay is also great for vintage pieces! ;-) tara
ReplyDeletegreat advice! I love your idea on the lust and need list! gotta do that nect time I go shopping!
ReplyDeleteso very very true on the trend thing--if anything looks vaguely kitschy, i don't fork over more than $20.
ReplyDeleteleather satchels, however, are a totally different matter!
I always find accessories tough to shop for... I tend to get an idea of what I want in mind and end up searching world for it (although it may not exist.) If and when I find it, I'm so tired of searching that I will spend a fortune if neccessary.
ReplyDeleteIn order to curb that habit, I've starting hunting eBay for lower priced versions of the things I'm lusting after. It's saved me at least $40 already, the only problem is waiting while things are shipped... Not as much instant gratification, but c'est la vie :)
xox,

Forever 21 is my new accessories store. It's fashionable and affordable.. cant go wrong there.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great advice
i love forever21 accessories :)

Great tips here! I've bought a lot of jewelry at F21. My new plan is to buy jewelry less often, but of higher quality and that's not too trendy. I've been loving big bold colorful piece lately!
ReplyDeleteI always have to stop myself from purchasing too many "trendy" pieces...always better to invest in some classics!

I'm trying to build up my accessory repertoire. I like F21 and Charlotte Russe for cheap trendy jewelry and save up for pieces that I would expect to last through many seasons. I love Kate Spade's floral bib necklaces and eBay has a ton for a discounted price, so that is how I save as well!

Great post! :) I love your little points! I love Forever 21 for cheap accessories. I never spend more than what I need for trendy things :D
ReplyDeletei totally do all my "thrifty" shopping at F21!! i try to stick to just one store, too, or only buy stuff on sale if it is a trendy item.
ReplyDelete[oomph.]
Cool post! I'm a blogger too, it would be nice if you could stop by my blog sometime :) :)

I agree, those of us who love fashion love accessories. They're like the icing on the cake. F21 has so much to choose from! But I avoid overspending by having Gina send me her new creations from LBD. Lucky to have a sister as a jewelry designer. Thanks again for doing a LOTD! XO
ReplyDeletelove forever 21 you can get such cute stuff there but at good prices!
ReplyDeletegreat tips also! use them next time i go shopping!

ReplyDeletei love your tips also!

I just went to Forever 21 yesterday and found myself in this dilemma! I was holding about 6 different necklaces, but all I did was stop at one of the tables and did the elimination game. I narrowed it down to 3!

Wonderful advice!!! I also prefer F21 for trendier purchases. I also like copying pricier items with a good DIY project.
ReplyDeleteAwesome tips. I loathe shopping for accessories since I am extremely picky and feel like it's a waste of money. It's so easy to buy one thing and then the floodgates open and I want to buy 15 more!! Hopefully your tips will stick with me.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I never spend a lot on jewelry. I'd rather have less expensive and more unique jewelry to complement my outfits.

I definitely overspend on accessories but I have slowed down my spending this year. I typically buy from Forever 21 for trendy pieces but for classic pieces, I spend a little more.
ReplyDeleteI follow the same tips, but I've never had an issue of overspending on accessories because I rarely buy them, haha. Nevertheless, another rule I follow is asking myself, "Will this accessory go with many of my clothing pieces?" If not, then it's a no. Ah, another rule I use is the like it or love it: If I don't love the piece, then I don't buy it. I've saved a bundle I'm sure with this rule for accessories, clothing and shoes. Why spend money on something that is only: "Yeah, I like it."
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! Another place I like to find inexpensive stuff is Etsy, H&M, and Ebay! But Forever21 is definitely the easiest! -Jessica
