We never had problems disposing things that are no longer of value, like bad cards in poker, college sweatshirts and definitely bad boys. When it comes to our favorite makeup, however, we feel terrible about throwing them away.
Don't worry. Most girlie girls are prone to keeping makeup for way too long, even if they give us irritated eyes and pimply faces.
After years of ignoring health problems caused by old makeup, I advice that you let them go. No matter how attached you feel about your favorite gloss and beloved mascara, you should really think of the bacteria they have collected, and how bad they are to your skin.
So how long should you keep your makeup? Here is Girlie Blog's guide:
Eye Shadow and Pencil Eyeliner: 3 years.
(Tip: Sharpen eyeliner often.)
Foundation and concealer: 1 year
Este Lauder Double Wear
Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer
Physicans Formula Gentle Cover Concealer
Powder: 2 years
Lipstick and Lip Gloss: 2 years
Estee Lauder Lipstick
Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color
Covergirl Wetslicks Lip Gloss
Two Faced Glamour Gloss Volumizing Lip Gloss
Estee Lauder Lipstick
Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Color
Covergirl Wetslicks Lip Gloss
Two Faced Glamour Gloss Volumizing Lip Gloss
Makeup Brush: Forever
(Tip: wash them monthly with a gentle soap.)

Do you have advice to share?
My main rule is if it smells, toss it! LOL Mascara and foundation and anything liquidy are usually the first to go in my stash. Thanks for the great post!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that I don't have a problem tossing are mascaras and super cheappy eye shadows that I never use. But I have a difficult time parting with my lipsticks :(
ReplyDeleteHi, thanks for the guidelines, I am bad with throwing stuff out. Especially blush and lipstick (I think that i had my Nars Orgasm blush for 5 years until i ran out).
ReplyDeleteI like elf products|

I am the worst about throwing makeup out, especially the goooood stuff! xoxo
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU for putting this post together! I know there is that uncapped sign on some products with a number and m to tell u how long to keep it but who remembers when they buy a cosmetic product, esp if you don't use it daily? I am going to share this post via twitter because everyone can benefit! Thank you :D

I know this is important and that I shoul follow these rules but I honestly don't care. I will use a product until I can tell it's not good anymore. I just can't bring myself to throw away something that still works!
ReplyDelete*whispers* I keep mascara longer than 3 months. Eek. I know I need to change this! :X
ReplyDeletethanks for the rules :) but personally I only throw stuff out when it smells or I finish it up, like I keep my mascaras for a year meh :P
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is very useful! ;)
ReplyDeletevery good post as always important and often we don't think of tossing old makeup! the mascara one is the most important because it holds alot of bacteria...I mark my calendar when it's time to toss it so I remember...
ReplyDeleteSome very good quality products can last longer actually. I have a palette of eye shadow from Orlane Paris that is used to be my Mom and it lasted me for 5 years. And I have sensitive skin and eyes. Lol. I guess for some things, money doesn't lie.
ReplyDeleteAND, you can use eyebrow pencil until they are too short to use, hehehe...
