START SAVING FROM YOUR MORNING CUP OF COFFEE

This is a cup of freshly made Starbucks Americano.  It costs $2.09.  I used to start the day with it every morning.

In an attempt to save some money, this is what I purchased from the local grocery store.  It costs about $8.00 a pack (340 g) and makes about 22 cups of coffee (the way I make it).

Every morning, a fresh cup of coffee is brewed while I get ready.

Right before stepping out the door, I pour myself a cup to go, using these dixie cups I bought from Target for only $4.00 for a stack of 14.

And if I really want to advertise my yuppy lifestyle, I can always use my Starbucks mug.

So how much am I saving, approximately?

Here's what I was spending before:

($2.09 per cup of tall americano) x (7 days a week) = $14.63 per week

Here's what I am spending now:

Coffee: $8 for 22 cups = $0.36 per cup a day
Portable cup: $4 for 14 cups = $.29 per cup

That's only $0.65 a day!  A saving of:
$1.44 a day
$10.08 a week
and just about $43.20 in a 30-day month!

And btw, Starbucks Expresso Roast tastes just as rich and refreshing as their Americano!

That's a great way to save some benjamins!

  1. I wish I could do that. I am addicted to Starbucks. I have to have Javachip Frappucino every morning ($4.75 for a grande) but I really can't make that at home. I am trying to cut it down but so far it hasn't been working yet. Good for you!

  13. Great post, it's amazing what one can save while cutting off a few unnecessary things and just do them yourself. Well done. I think the same applies for manicures and pedicures most of the time unless you have a special occasion or something :P xoxo!!

  14. Hubby brews us coffee every morning - The Espresso Roast :D, but there are those afternoons where I need another pick me up and it's just more "convinient" to walk over to starbucks from the office. hee hee. I'm also addicted to their iced raspberry tea lemonade...

That's great that you're saving that extra money though. :)

  21. Yea things like that can add up and we don't always take the time to sit down and calculate. I used to buy lunch several times in one week but started packing from home since last year and cut down on eating out. It makes a significant difference.

    Like you blog :)

  23. It's amazing the amount of money people can spend on coffee... I admit, sometimes you just have to treat yourself. My husband got me a Keuring machine for Christmas and it's the best thing ever and being that I'm not a morning person, there is no waiting for the coffee to brew!!

p.s. I am having an Ann Taylor Loft giveaway if it interests you! xo

  24. What a calculation! What a smart girl you are. I too am a lover of Starbucks latte, and am beginning to reconsider my habit of spending money that much just for a cup of lattes. I could use the money for something else :p This is quite an inspiration. Thanks girl! Have a wonderful day!

  26. LOL at "yuppy lifestyle"! ;) I had the same issue a while ago only it was with Sbux's hot chocolate which I ordered almost daily. I bought myself a machine, some good cocoa powder and went to town saving some dough. Yay US! XD

  27. Yea, when you really think about things you save SOOO much money!! That's why I don't go out with the other people at work for lunch, eating out every day is a lot of moola, haha

  28. Great post! A $2 cup of coffee doesn't seem like a lot, but it does add up over the course of a month or even a year. Have you considered using a reusable travel mug or cup? Not having to buy Dixie cups could help you save even more!

  29. girl~ good job!
i'm doing the same... except i will still splurge on a starbucks if it's a specialty drink like a pumkin spiced latte.

  30. I'm not a coffee drinker, so this doesn't apply directly to me, but it does to other little things that I spend money on that I could really cut out. Thanks for the reminder!

  40. This is a great post because I don't think a lot of people realize how much money they could save by doing something so SIMPLE.

My boyfriend and I used to go out to dinner at least two to three times per week. When I lost my job, we stopped. I discovered that we were saving hundreds of dollars per month!! It's insane how much money we spend without realizing it. A $20 dinner quickly turns to $60 per week and so forth. Yikes!

Hopefully you have inspired others to take another look at their spending. :)

  41. I started making my own too, couldn't believe how much I was spending when I added it up!

  42. Aww what an inspiring post! I always make my own coffee even though sometimes I make it too dark >.< LOL
